FMRNA’S History and Founder
Nancy Noble, founder of FMRNA, received her nursing education at Hinsdale Hospital School of Nursing and her Bachelors degree from the University of Saint Francis. She began her nursing career in the intensive and coronary care units, where she worked for 13 years. In 1980, she began working as the nurse manager at the Hinsdale Family Medicine Center, the model unit for the Hinsdale Family Practice Residency Program.
After working with the residency program and as a practice manager for family practice physicians for 22 years, Nancy returned to Hinsdale Hospital where she is currently working (part time) in the neuro intensive care and step down unit.
Nancy attended her first RAP conference in 1982, and subsequently developed an interest in the education, recognition, and support for nurses working in the residency educational programs. Laura Soden from the Overlook Hospital in Summit, New Jersey, and the first president of FMRNA, worked with Nancy to begin the process of developing an organization dedicated to the nurses responsible for the education of the family practice residents.
In 1988, the committee of interested nurses worked on bylaws and objectives. At the 1989 RAP Workshop, FMRNA officially became an organization dedicated to the enhancement and education of family practice residency nurses.
